We cannot choose everything that happens today, but we can choose what we will do with what happens. Biblical happiness is not pretending that life is easy. It is learning to receive the day from Jesus and refusing to surrender the day to fear, anger, regret, or circumstances.
1. Choose Jesus First
Matthew 6:33 — “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Happiness begins when Jesus has first place rather than being added after everything else.
2. Choose Gratitude
1 Thessalonians 5:18 — “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Gratitude changes what I notice.
3. Choose Today
Matthew 6:34 — “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow.”
Do not lose today’s blessings worrying about tomorrow’s problems.
4. Choose to Rejoice
Philippians 4:4 — “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
I may not rejoice in everything that happens, but I can always rejoice in Jesus.
5. Choose What You Think About
Philippians 4:8 — “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely…think about these things.”
My thoughts have enormous influence over the spirit in which I live.
6. Choose Contentment
Philippians 4:11 — “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”
Contentment says, “Jesus is enough for me here.”
7. Choose to Stop Comparing
Galatians 6:4 — “Let each one test his own work.”
Comparison steals happiness by making me live someone else’s life.
8. Choose Peace
John 14:27 — “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”
Jesus gives me a peace circumstances cannot produce.
9. Choose to Forgive
Colossians 3:13 — “As the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
Holding bitterness keeps yesterday alive.
10. Choose Kindness
Ephesians 4:32 — “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted.”
One simple act of kindness can change my entire day.
11. Choose Encouragement
1 Thessalonians 5:11 — “Encourage one another and build one another up.”
Happiness grows when I stop asking what people can give me and begin asking what I can give them.
12. Choose to Serve
Mark 10:45 — “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”
Following Jesus moves my attention away from myself.
13. Choose Generosity
Acts 20:35 — “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Jesus teaches that giving creates a blessing receiving alone cannot provide.
14. Choose Good Words
Proverbs 16:24 — “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”
My words affect both the people around me and the person I am becoming.
15. Choose to Laugh
Proverbs 17:22 — “A joyful heart is good medicine.”
Life is serious, but everything does not have to be treated seriously.
16. Choose to Let Something Go
Philippians 3:13 — “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.”
Some things must be released if I am going to walk forward with Jesus.
17. Choose Not to Complain
Philippians 2:14 — “Do all things without grumbling or disputing.”
Complaining repeatedly trains my heart to see what is wrong.
18. Choose Trust Over Worry
Proverbs 3:5 — “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
Worry asks, “What if?” Trust says, “Jesus is with me.”
19. Choose Prayer
Philippians 4:6 — “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Instead of carrying everything, I can talk with Jesus about everything.
20. Choose God’s Word
Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
God’s Word keeps my thinking from being controlled by my feelings.
21. Choose the Next Right Thing
James 4:17 — “Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
I do not have to solve my whole life today. I need to obey Jesus in the next thing.
22. Choose People
Romans 12:10 — “Love one another with brotherly affection.”
Relationships are more important than many of the things that consume my attention.
23. Choose to Notice God’s Goodness
Psalm 34:8 — “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!”
God is doing good things around me that I can completely miss.
24. Choose Simplicity
Luke 10:42 — “One thing is necessary.”
Martha had many things. Mary chose Jesus.
25. Choose to Slow Down
Psalm 46:10 — “Be still, and know that I am God.”
Hurry can keep me from noticing the presence of God.
26. Choose Hope
Romans 15:13 — “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.”
Christian hope is not wishing things will work out. It is confidence that Jesus has me.
27. Choose to Accept What You Cannot Change
Romans 8:28 — “We know that for those who love God all things work together for good.”
Acceptance does not mean everything is good. It means Jesus can work even here.
28. Choose to Enjoy God’s Gifts
1 Timothy 6:17 — God “richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”
Enjoy the meal. Enjoy the conversation. Enjoy the walk. Enjoy the people God has placed around you.
29. Choose to Make Someone Else Happy
Romans 12:15 — “Rejoice with those who rejoice.”
One of the quickest ways out of self-centered unhappiness is to become interested in someone else’s good.
30. Choose to Remember Where You Are Going
John 14:3 — “I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
This day is not the whole story. Jesus is taking me home.
31. Choose Jesus Again
John 15:11 — “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
At the end of it all, happiness is not a technique. It is life lived close to Jesus.
Choose Jesus. Choose gratitude. Choose people. Choose the next right thing. And refuse to give today’s happiness to something you cannot control.
