WHY CAN I TRUST THE BIBLE?

1. Jesus Said God’s Word Is Truth

John 17:17. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

Jesus gives us a strong place to begin. He does not say that God’s Word merely contains some helpful ideas or that it is one possible way of understanding life. Jesus says plainly, “Thy word is truth.”

That matters because our feelings change. Opinions change. Cultures change. What people accept today may be rejected tomorrow. But truth does not become untrue because people stop believing it.

Jesus trusted the Word of God completely. If I am going to follow Jesus, I cannot separate Jesus from His view of Scripture. I do not get to say, “I trust Jesus, but I am not sure I trust the Bible He trusted.”

My confidence in Scripture begins with my confidence in Jesus.

Jesus called God’s Word truth. I can build my life on what He trusted.

• God has not left me guessing about truth.
• His Word gives me something solid to stand on.
• My feelings do not determine what is true.
• Jesus gives me confidence in Scripture.

• Read Scripture expecting God to teach you.
• When feelings disagree with Scripture, stay with Scripture.
• Ask Jesus to correct what you believe wrongly.
• Carry one truth from God’s Word into your day.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, You called Your Father’s Word truth. Teach me to trust what You trusted. When my thoughts, feelings, or experiences pull me in another direction, bring me back to Your Word. Give me a heart that listens, believes, and obeys what You have said. Amen.

Today, am I allowing God’s Word to tell me what is true?

2. Jesus Trusted the Scriptures

Matthew 4:4 “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, Jesus repeatedly answered, “It is written.”

Jesus knew Scripture. He believed Scripture. He used Scripture when temptation came.

Notice what Jesus did not do. He did not depend upon His feelings. He did not argue endlessly with Satan. He stood on what God had already said.

That gives us a very practical reason to know the Bible. We do not study Scripture simply to collect information. We need God’s Word in us because there will be times when life hits hard and we need to know what God has said.

Jesus showed us how to stand.

If Jesus answered temptation with Scripture, I need Scripture ready in my heart too.

• Jesus treated Scripture as completely dependable.
• God’s Word gives me truth when temptation speaks.
• I need more than physical food to live well.
• My spiritual life depends upon hearing God.

• Begin learning important Scriptures by heart.
• Notice what temptation repeatedly attacks in your life.
• Find Scripture that speaks directly to that struggle.
• Answer temptation with what God has said.

Prayer-Jesus, You stood against temptation with the Word of God. Put Your Word deep into my mind and heart. When temptation comes, remind me of what You have said. Give me strength to believe Your Word and choose the next right thing instead of following temptation. Amen.

What truth from Scripture do I need ready before temptation comes?

3. Jesus Said Scripture Cannot Be Broken

John 10:35. “The scripture cannot be broken.”

Jesus spoke of Scripture as something dependable. God’s Word does not fail because life becomes difficult or because someone argues against it.

We sometimes trust Scripture when everything is going well, but begin questioning it when life becomes painful. Jesus gives us another way to live. God’s Word remains true in good days and bad days.

A promise may not be fulfilled in the way I expected. A prayer may not be answered when I wanted. I may not understand what God is doing. But my confusion does not make God’s Word unreliable.

There will always be things I do not understand. I can still trust the God who understands everything.

My circumstances may change. God’s Word does not.

• Scripture is dependable.
• Difficulty does not cancel truth.
• I do not have to understand everything before trusting God.
• Jesus teaches me to stand securely on God’s Word.

• Do not abandon Scripture because today is difficult.
• Bring your questions to God instead of running from Him.
• Keep reading even when you do not immediately understand.
• Hold tightly to what God has clearly said.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, there are things I do not understand. Sometimes life makes me question things I thought I knew. Keep me close to You and close to Your Word. Teach me to trust You when I cannot see what You are doing. Your Word is stronger than my confusion. Amen.

Will I trust God’s Word even when I do not understand my circumstances?

4. Jesus Said the Scriptures Testify About Him

John 5:39. “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

The Bible is not mainly a book of rules. It is not simply a collection of stories about good people and bad people. Jesus tells us that Scripture ultimately points toward Him.

That changes the way we read.

When we read Genesis, we are watching God’s plan of redemption begin to unfold. When we read the prophets, we see God’s promises moving toward Christ. When we read the Gospels, we meet Jesus in His earthly ministry. When we read the letters, we learn what His death and resurrection mean for us and how His life changes ours.

The Bible keeps bringing us to Jesus.

I can know Bible facts and still miss Him. Jesus warned people about that very thing. They studied Scripture but refused to come to the One Scripture revealed.

The goal of Bible study is not simply knowing more. It is knowing Jesus more deeply.

• Jesus is central to the story of Scripture.
• Bible knowledge should lead me toward Christ.
• I can know facts about Scripture without walking with Jesus.
• God’s Word helps me see who Jesus really is.

• Ask, “What does this passage show me about God?”
• Ask, “How does this help me understand Jesus?”
• Do not read merely to finish a chapter.
• Let Scripture draw you closer to Christ.

Prayer-Jesus, do not let me become someone who knows the Bible but misses You. As I read, open my eyes to see You more clearly. Show me Your character, Your work, Your love, Your holiness, and Your saving power. Let every day in Your Word deepen my walk with You. Amen.

Am I reading the Bible simply to know Scripture, or to know Jesus better?

5. Jesus Fulfilled What Scripture Promised

Luke 24:44. “These are the words which I spake unto you…that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.”

After His resurrection, Jesus explained that His life, death, and resurrection had not happened accidentally. God had been preparing His people for Christ throughout the Scriptures.

The promises came over many generations. Different writers lived in different places and different circumstances. Yet the story kept moving toward Jesus.

He came as God promised. He lived as God promised. He suffered as God promised.

He died for our sins as God promised. He rose from the dead as God promised.

This gives me confidence that the Bible is more than a collection of unrelated religious writings. There is a purpose moving through it, and that purpose reaches its center in Jesus Christ.

The God who kept His promises about Jesus can be trusted with His promises to me.

• God’s plan did not begin when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
• Scripture had been pointing toward Christ for generations.
• Jesus fulfills God’s promises.
• God’s faithfulness in the past strengthens my faith today.

• Remember that God sees farther ahead than you do.
• Do not assume delay means God has forgotten.
• Look for God’s faithfulness throughout Scripture.
• Trust Jesus with what you cannot yet see.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, You came exactly as God had promised. Your life, Your Cross, and Your resurrection show me that God keeps His Word. Help me trust You with the parts of my life that I cannot understand yet. Keep me faithful while I wait, and remind me that You have never failed to keep Your promises. Amen.

If God faithfully fulfilled His promises in Jesus, what keeps me from trusting Him with today?

6. The Bible Comes From God

2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

The Bible was written by men, but Scripture tells us that God was behind its writing. The word “inspiration” means that God breathed out His Word through human writers. Their personalities were real. Their experiences were real. Their writing styles were different. But God worked through them so that what they wrote communicated what He intended.

This is why the Bible carries authority. It is not simply man’s best thoughts about God. It is God’s Word given through men.

The Bible matters because God has spoken through it.

• Scripture ultimately comes from God.
• God used human writers without removing their personalities.
• The Bible teaches, corrects, and trains me.
• I should approach Scripture ready to listen.

• Read the Bible as God’s Word, not merely as literature.
• Let Scripture correct you when necessary.
• Do not only read the passages you already agree with.
• Ask what God wants to change in you today.

Prayer-Father, thank You for giving us Your Word. Help me receive Scripture with humility. Correct me when I am wrong, teach me what is true, and use Your Word to shape the way I live. Lord Jesus, keep me listening and obedient. Amen.

When I open the Bible, am I prepared to hear what God says?

7. God Used Real People to Write His Word

2 Peter 1:21 “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

God did not drop the Bible out of heaven already printed. He worked through real people. Moses knew the wilderness. David knew battle, failure, fear, and worship. Luke investigated events carefully. Paul wrote to churches he knew and loved.

Their humanity does not weaken Scripture. It shows us how God works. He takes real people in real circumstances and carries His truth through them.

The Holy Spirit did not erase the writers. He guided them.

God used ordinary human lives to communicate His extraordinary truth.

• Biblical writers were real people living in history.
• Their personalities and experiences appear in their writings.
• The Holy Spirit guided what they communicated.
• God is able to work through human weakness without losing His truth.

• Notice the human situation behind the passage you read.
• Remember that God works through imperfect people.
• Do not assume your weakness makes you useless to God.
• Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand what He inspired.

Prayer-Holy Spirit, You guided the writers of Scripture. Guide me as I read their words. Help me understand what God intended to teach and help me obey it. Thank You that You still work through ordinary people who surrender themselves to You. Amen.

If God could work through them, what might He do through a surrendered life like mine?

8. The Bible Tells One Great Story

Luke 24:27-“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”

The Bible contains many books, many writers, and many kinds of writing. Yet Jesus showed His disciples that these Scriptures were moving toward one great purpose.

Creation. Sin. Promise. Sacrifice. Redemption. Messiah. Cross. Resurrection. New life.

The Bible develops over centuries, but the story does not wander aimlessly. God is moving history toward Jesus Christ and the redemption He accomplished.

That unity gives us another reason to trust Scripture.

Different books, different centuries, one God, one plan of redemption centered in Jesus.

Meaning

• The Bible has one unfolding story.
• God’s plan develops throughout Scripture.
• Jesus stands at the center of God’s saving work.
• The Old and New Testaments belong together.

• Read each passage as part of the larger Biblical story.
• Look for what God is doing, not merely what people are doing.
• Ask how the passage connects to God’s redemption.
• Keep Jesus at the center of your understanding.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, help me see the Bible as the great story of what God has done to redeem sinful people. Keep me from getting lost in details and missing You. Show me how every part fits into Your purpose and draw me deeper into Your life. Amen.

Do I see the Bible as disconnected stories, or as God’s great story leading me to Jesus?

9. The Bible Tells the Truth About People

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

One reason I trust the Bible is that it does not hide human failure.

Noah became drunk. Abraham lied. Jacob deceived. Moses became angry. David committed terrible sin. Peter denied Jesus. The disciples argued over who was greatest.

If human beings were inventing a religious book to make their heroes look impressive, we would expect them to clean these stories up. Scripture does the opposite.

The Bible tells the truth because God tells the truth.

And that means it can tell the truth about me too.

The Bible does not pretend people are better than they really are, and neither should I.

• Scripture does not hide human sin.
• Biblical heroes needed God’s mercy just as I do.
• Failure does not surprise God.
• Jesus came to save sinners, not people pretending to be righteous.

• Stop hiding from God what He already knows.
• Be honest about your sin.

• Remember that Jesus came for people who need saving.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, thank You that I do not have to pretend with You. You know every failure, every weakness, and every sin. Give me courage to be honest before You. Forgive me, cleanse me, and teach me to walk differently today. Amen.

What would change if I became completely honest with Jesus about where I really am?

10. The Bible Tells the Truth About Me

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword…and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Sometimes I read the Bible and feel comforted. Other times I read it and realize it is talking directly to something inside me that needs to change.

That is part of its power.

The Bible does not simply describe people who lived thousands of years ago. It exposes pride, fear, anger, lust, selfishness, unbelief, bitterness, and every other struggle still living in the human heart.

But God does not expose my heart merely to shame me. He shows me what is there so that I can bring it to Jesus.

God’s Word cuts deeply, but Jesus heals what it reveals.

The Bible tells me the truth about myself so Jesus can change what I cannot change by myself.

Meaning

• God’s Word reaches beneath outward behavior.
• Scripture exposes motives as well as actions.
• God shows me my sin so I can bring it to Christ.
• Conviction is an invitation to change.

Daily Walk

• Pay attention when Scripture makes you uncomfortable.
• Ask why a particular verse bothers you.
• Do not defend what Jesus wants to change.
• Respond quickly when God shows you something.

Prayer-Jesus, let Your Word reach every part of me. Show me what I cannot see clearly about myself. When Your Word exposes sin, pride, fear, or selfishness, help me not to run from You. Change me from the inside out and teach me to live today in Your truth. Amen.

What is God’s Word showing me about myself that Jesus wants to change?

11. The Bible Explains My Greatest Problem

Isaiah 53:6 – “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.”

The Bible understands what is wrong with us. Our deepest problem is not simply that we make mistakes, have bad habits, or live in difficult circumstances. We have gone our own way instead of God’s way. The Bible calls that sin.

That explains much of the brokenness we see around us and within us. We want control. We want our own way. We make choices that hurt ourselves and other people. We cannot repair our relationship with God by simply trying harder.

The Bible can be trusted because it tells the truth about the human condition. And it does not leave us there. Isaiah 53 points directly toward the One who would carry our sin—Jesus Christ.

The Bible identifies my real problem so it can lead me to God’s real answer: Jesus.

• My deepest problem is sin.
• Sin means choosing my way instead of God’s way.
• I cannot save myself by trying harder.
• God knew my problem before I understood it.

• Stop blaming everyone else for what is wrong in you.
• Admit where you have chosen your own way.
• Bring your sin honestly to Jesus.
• Ask Him to lead you differently today.

Prayer – Lord Jesus, I have gone my own way many times. I have sinned against You in thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions. Thank You for loving me enough to tell me the truth about myself. Forgive me and teach me to follow You instead of demanding my own way. Lead me in the next right thing today. Amen.

Where am I still insisting on my way instead of Jesus’ way?

12. The Bible Gives Me God’s Answer to Sin

1 Peter 2:24. “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree.”

The Bible does not simply tell me that I am a sinner. It tells me what God has done about my sin.

Jesus did not come merely to teach us how to become better people. He came to save us. On the Cross, Jesus bore our sins in His own body. He took upon Himself the judgment our sin deserved.

That is the heart of the Gospel.

I am not saved because I finally cleaned myself up. I am not saved because I became religious. I am saved by Jesus Christ, who died for my sins and rose from the dead.

The Bible can be trusted because from beginning to end it points toward God’s answer for sinful people.

My sin is greater than I can fix, but Jesus is greater than my sin.

• Jesus personally bore our sins on the Cross.
• Salvation is God’s work, not my achievement.
• Jesus Christ alone saves.
• The Cross shows both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God’s love.

• Stop trying to earn what Jesus has already provided.
• Confess sin instead of hiding it.
• Thank Jesus specifically for the Cross.
• Live today as someone who belongs to the One who died for you.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, You carried my sin in Your own body on the Cross. I could never pay that debt myself. Thank You for shedding Your blood for me and giving Your life for my salvation. Keep the Cross before me today. Help me live in gratitude, obedience, and love for You. Amen.

Does the way I live today show that the Cross of Jesus matters to me?

13. The Bible Clearly Points Me to Salvation in Jesus

John 20:31 “These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

John tells us exactly why he wrote his Gospel. He wanted us to know who Jesus is, believe in Him, and receive life through Him.

That is one reason the Bible is so important. God has not left us wondering how we can be saved. Scripture repeatedly brings us to Jesus Christ.

The Bible does not say that every road eventually leads to God. It does not tell us to discover our own truth. It tells us that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that life is found in Him.

Biblical faith is personal. I must do more than know facts about Jesus. I must believe Him, trust Him, and receive the salvation He purchased for me.

The Bible was written to bring me to the real Jesus so that I may believe in Him and live.

Meaning

• Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.
• Scripture clearly tells me where salvation is found.
• Knowing facts about Jesus is not the same as trusting Him.
• Eternal life is found in Christ.

• Keep Jesus at the center of your Bible reading.
• Trust what Scripture says about who He is.
• Remember that your salvation rests in Christ, not your performance.
• Tell someone else what Jesus has done for you.

Prayer-Jesus, You are the Christ, the Son of God. Thank You for coming to save sinners like me. Keep me from turning Christianity into rules, habits, or religion without You. Deepen my trust in You and let my life show others that real life is found in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Am I merely learning about Jesus, or am I living today in personal dependence upon Him?

14. The Apostles Were Eyewitnesses

1 John 1:1 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life.”

The apostles did not present Jesus as a legend passed down to them from distant generations. They said, We heard Him. We saw Him. We were with Him.

John had walked with Jesus. He heard Jesus teach. He saw His miracles. He watched Him die. Then he encountered the risen Christ.

Christianity rests upon events that happened in history. The New Testament writers repeatedly placed their testimony where it could be examined by people who lived near the time of those events.

They were not simply saying, “Here is what we feel about God.” They were saying, “Here is what we saw and heard.”

The Gospel is rooted in eyewitness testimony about the real Jesus.

Meaning

• Jesus lived in real human history.
• The apostles personally knew Him.
• Their testimony was based on what they saw and heard.
• Christian faith is grounded in what Jesus actually did.

Daily Walk

• Read the Gospels remembering that they describe real events.
• Listen carefully to what the eyewitnesses say about Jesus.
• Let their testimony strengthen your confidence.
• Ask what the Jesus they knew should mean for your life today.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us witnesses who saw You, heard You, and walked with You. As I read their testimony, help me see You more clearly. Strengthen my faith in what You actually did and teach me to follow the same living Jesus they proclaimed. Amen.

If these men really saw Jesus alive, how should that change the way I live today?

15. The Resurrection Was Publicly Proclaimed

1 Corinthians 15:6. “After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once.”

The resurrection of Jesus was not presented as a private spiritual experience that only one person claimed to have had. Paul says that the risen Jesus appeared to more than five hundred people at one time.

When Paul wrote these words, many of those witnesses were still alive. His claim could be questioned and investigated.

Everything rests here. Christianity is not simply the teaching of a good man who died. Jesus Christ rose bodily from the dead. The apostles preached it everywhere, and they were willing to suffer rather than deny what they had witnessed.

Because Jesus rose, His claims are different from those of every other religious teacher. The One who died for our sins is alive.

I trust the Bible because its central message stands upon the risen Jesus.

Meaning

• Jesus truly died.
• Jesus truly rose from the dead.
• Many people witnessed Him alive.
• My faith is in a living Savior.

Daily Walk

• Remember that you follow a living Jesus.
• Bring today’s problems to Him as someone who is present.
• Refuse to live as though death, failure, or fear has the final word.
• Walk today expecting Jesus to be with you.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, You died for my sins and rose from the grave. You are alive today. Keep that truth real in me. When fear, discouragement, or temptation comes, remind me that I am walking with the risen Christ. Help me live today with confidence, obedience, peace, and hope because You are alive. Amen.

If Jesus is alive and with me today, what do I really have to face alone?

16. The Apostles Were Willing to Suffer for Their Testimony

Acts 4:20. “For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

The apostles were not passing along something they had merely heard from someone else. They said they had seen Jesus, heard Him, walked with Him, watched Him die, and then encountered Him alive after His resurrection. When they were threatened and told to stop speaking about Jesus, they refused.

Their suffering does not by itself prove everything they said was true. People can suffer for something they sincerely but wrongly believe. But there is an important difference here: the apostles were in a position to know whether their testimony about Jesus was true. They were not dying for somebody else’s story. They were suffering for what they said they had personally seen and heard.

They could have made life much easier by simply becoming quiet about Jesus. They would not.

They were convinced that the Jesus they had watched die was alive again, and they could not stop talking about Him.

Meaning

• The apostles personally knew the events they proclaimed.
• Threats did not silence their testimony.
• Their message centered on Jesus Christ.
• Their courage gives weight to their eyewitness testimony.

Daily Walk

• Do not be embarrassed to belong to Jesus.
• Speak truth about what Christ has done in your life.
• Ask Jesus for courage when following Him costs something.
• Remember that comfort is not the measure of faithfulness.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, the apostles knew what they had seen and heard, and they would not deny You when following You became costly. Give me that kind of settled confidence. Help me never be ashamed of You. Give me courage to live faithfully and speak truthfully about what You have done for me. Amen.

When following Jesus costs me something, will I still stand with Him?

17. Scripture Has Been Carefully Preserved

Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”

The Bible has come to us across thousands of years. Before printing presses, Scripture had to be copied by hand. Copies were carried from one generation to another, from one country to another, and eventually into languages spoken all over the world.

Hand copying produced small differences among ancient manuscripts, but because so many manuscripts and early copies survive, scholars can compare them carefully. Those comparisons help us identify the wording of the Biblical text with very high confidence.

God did not preserve His Word by dropping one perfect printed Bible out of heaven. He preserved it through generations of people who copied, guarded, read, translated, and passed it forward.

We should never take that gift lightly.

The Bible in my hands has traveled through generations of faithful preservation so that I can read God’s Word today.

Meaning

• Scripture has been passed down across many centuries.
• Ancient manuscripts can be compared and studied.
• Small copying differences do not erase the message of Scripture.
• God has faithfully preserved His Word for His people.

• Be grateful that you have access to Scripture.
• Read the Bible you are blessed to possess.
• Do not let questions about manuscripts frighten you away from study.
• Treasure God’s Word enough to pass it to someone else.

Prayer-Father, thank You for preserving Your Word through the centuries. Thank You for every person who copied it, protected it, translated it, taught it, and passed it forward. Forgive me for the times I have treated my Bible casually. Give me hunger for Your truth and help me faithfully pass it to others. Amen.

If people sacrificed so much to preserve God’s Word, what am I doing with the Bible already in my hands?

18. God’s Word Has Survived Every Attack

Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

The Bible has been opposed for centuries. Governments have tried to suppress it. Critics have attacked it. People have mocked it, burned it, forbidden its distribution, and predicted that belief in it would disappear.

Yet Scripture continues to be read, studied, preached, translated, and trusted throughout the world.

That does not mean we should fear questions or refuse serious examination. Truth does not need us to protect it from honest questions. But after centuries of criticism, the Bible has not disappeared.

Even more importantly, the Jesus revealed in Scripture has not disappeared. Generation after generation keeps hearing the Gospel, believing in Christ, and discovering that His words still speak directly to human hearts.

People have attacked the Bible for centuries, but they have never been able to silence the voice of Jesus within it.

Meaning

• Opposition to Scripture is nothing new.
• God’s Word has survived powerful enemies.
• Honest questions should lead us toward careful study, not fear.
• Jesus’ words continue to speak across generations.

• Do not panic when someone criticizes the Bible.
• Listen carefully and investigate honest questions.
• Keep your confidence in Jesus rather than in arguments.
• Continue reading and obeying God’s Word.

Prayer-Lord Jesus, Your Word has stood through generations of opposition. Keep me from being frightened by every criticism I hear. Give me a mind willing to learn, a heart willing to trust, and the wisdom to examine questions carefully. Keep me anchored in You and in the truth You have given us. Amen.

When someone challenges the Bible, will I become afraid, or will I keep learning and keep trusting Jesus?

19. The Bible Can Be Examined

Acts 17:11 “They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The people at Berea did something important. They listened to Paul’s preaching, but they also searched the Scriptures to examine what he was saying. Paul did not condemn them for asking questions.

Biblical faith is not blind faith. Christianity invites us to think, read, investigate, compare, and ask whether what we are being taught agrees with God’s Word.

That is especially important today. A preacher can be wrong. A teacher can be wrong. A popular Christian speaker can be wrong. I can be wrong. Our final authority cannot be someone’s personality, education, position, or confidence. We keep going back to Scripture.

God does not ask me to believe everything somebody says about the Bible. He teaches me to search His Word for myself.

• Questions are not enemies of faith.
• Scripture should test what Christians teach.
• No human teacher is beyond correction.

20. The Bible Fits Together

Psalm 119:160 “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”

The Bible was written across many centuries by many different writers living in very different circumstances. It contains history, poetry, prophecy, wisdom, letters, Gospel accounts, and more. Yet one great message continues through it.

God is holy. Human beings have sinned. We cannot rescue ourselves. God moves toward sinful people in mercy. He promises redemption. The promises lead toward Jesus. Jesus comes, dies for our sins, sheds His blood, rises from the dead, and offers salvation to those who trust Him. Scripture then teaches those who belong to Christ how to walk with Him while awaiting His return.

There are difficult passages. There are places that require careful study. We should not pretend otherwise. But the deeper we understand Scripture, the more we see its remarkable unity.

The Bible tells one great story because behind its many human writers stands one God.

From Genesis to Revelation, God’s story keeps bringing us toward Jesus and the redemption He accomplished.

21. The Bible Shows Me What God Is Like

John 1:18. “The only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

We do not have to invent our own picture of God. We do not have to decide what we think God should be like. God has revealed Himself, and His clearest revelation is Jesus Christ.

Jesus shows us the holiness of God, the compassion of God, the truth of God, the mercy of God, and the love of God. When Jesus touches the leper, forgives the sinner, confronts hypocrisy, welcomes the broken, and gives His life on the Cross, we are seeing the heart of God.

This is another reason I trust the Bible. It does not leave God hidden behind human imagination. Scripture brings me to Jesus and says, Look at Him. This is what God is like.

I do not create God in my own image. I discover God as He has revealed Himself in Jesus.

22. The Bible Shows Me What Jesus Is Really Like

John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…full of grace and truth.”

Everybody seems to have an opinion about Jesus. Some picture Him as only gentle and accepting. Others see Him mainly as a strict judge. Some reduce Him to a good teacher or inspirational example.

The Bible will not let us create Jesus according to our preferences.

In Scripture we meet the real Jesus: fully compassionate and completely holy, gentle with the broken and direct with the proud, willing to forgive sinners but never pretending sin does not matter. Most importantly, we meet Jesus as the eternal Son of God who became flesh, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and is Lord.

I need the Biblical Jesus, not a Jesus I have created to make myself comfortable.

The Bible keeps correcting my picture of Jesus until I begin to see Him as He truly is.

• Jesus is more than a teacher or example.
• Jesus is God the Son who came in the flesh.
• His grace never removes His truth.
• Scripture protects me from creating my own version of Jesus.

23. The Bible Gives Me Light for the Next Step

Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

A lamp does not necessarily show me everything miles ahead. It gives enough light to take the next step. That is often how God uses His Word in our lives. We want Him to explain the next five years. He often shows us what faithfulness looks like today.

Scripture teaches me how to speak, forgive, work, resist temptation, handle anger, treat people, use money, face fear, and make decisions. I may not know everything God is doing, but His Word often makes the next right thing very clear. I can trust the Bible because it gives practical light for real life.

God may not show me everything ahead, but His Word gives me enough light to walk faithfully today.

24. The Bible Helps Me Recognize Sin

Psalm 119:11-“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Sin often looks harmless before we act on it. Temptation tells us, “This will not matter. Nobody will know. You deserve this. Just once will not hurt.” God’s Word tells us the truth before sin gets control.

Scripture teaches us what pleases God and what damages our fellowship with Him. As His Word becomes part of our thinking, we begin recognizing danger earlier. We start seeing an attitude, thought, desire, or decision for what it really is.

The purpose is not merely knowing more rules. The purpose is staying close to Jesus.

God’s Word helps me recognize what will pull me away from Jesus before I follow it.

25. The Bible Gives Me Strength Against Temptation

Matthew 4:10 “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

Jesus showed us something very practical in the wilderness. Satan tempted Him repeatedly, and Jesus repeatedly answered with the Word of God.

Jesus did not negotiate with temptation. He knew what His Father had said and stood there.

We need the same settled truth. Temptation becomes powerful when we begin debating something God has already made clear. Scripture gives us a place to stand: God has spoken. I belong to Jesus. I know the direction I need to go.

Knowing a verse is not magic. The power is not in repeating words as a formula. The strength comes as I believe God’s truth, depend upon Jesus, and obey what He has said.

God’s Word gives me truth to stand on while Jesus gives me strength to obey it.

26. The Bible Gives Me Hope When Life Hurts

Romans 15:4 “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”

The Bible never pretends that following God means an easy life. Its pages are filled with people who suffered, waited, grieved, failed, were betrayed, and sometimes wondered where God was. Yet Scripture continually shows us that difficulty does not mean God has abandoned His people.

When I am hurting, I need more than somebody telling me everything will work out the way I want. I need something solid. God’s Word reminds me who God is, what He has already done, and what He has promised.

Most of all, Scripture brings me back to Jesus. He understands suffering. He endured rejection, pain, the Cross, and death. Then He rose from the grave. My hope is not that nothing bad will happen. My hope is that Jesus will be with me whatever happens.

The Bible gives me hope because it keeps reminding me that my suffering is never greater than my Savior.

27. The Bible Changes the Way I Live

James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

The purpose of Bible study is not merely to know more Bible. God’s Word is meant to change how I actually live.

I can underline verses, attend Bible studies, hear sermons, and know Christian language while still refusing to obey what God has shown me. James says I can even deceive myself into believing that hearing truth is the same as living truth.

Jesus calls me beyond information to obedience.

When Scripture tells me to forgive, I forgive. When it tells me to speak truth, I speak truth. When it exposes sin, I confess it. When it tells me to love someone difficult, I ask Jesus to love that person through me.

I show that I trust God’s Word when I actually do what it says.

• Hearing Scripture is not the same as obeying it.
• God’s Word is intended to shape daily life.
• Obedience turns truth into practice.
• Jesus wants His Word lived through me.

28. The Holy Spirit Helps Me Understand God’s Word

John 16:13 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.”

We should study the Bible carefully. We should understand history, context, words, and meaning. But Bible study is more than an academic exercise. The same Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture is present with believers as we read it.

That does not mean every thought that enters my mind while reading the Bible comes from God. I still need to read carefully and understand Scripture in its context. The Holy Spirit does not lead me into an interpretation that contradicts what God has already said.

But I do not read alone.

I can pray, “Holy Spirit, help me understand. Show me what is true. Show me where I am wrong. Show me how this should change me.”

I study God’s Word with my mind open and my heart dependent upon the Holy Spirit.

• The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth.
• Careful study and dependence upon the Spirit belong together.
• The Spirit will never contradict Scripture.
• Understanding should lead toward obedience.

29. The Bible Keeps Bringing Me Back to Jesus

Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”

I can become distracted very quickly. Fear gets my attention. Problems get my attention. Other people get my attention. My failures get my attention. Sometimes even religious activity gets my attention.

Scripture keeps saying, Look back to Jesus.

When I fail, Scripture brings me to His forgiveness. When I am afraid, it reminds me of His presence. When I do not know what to do, it brings me to His wisdom. When I become proud, it reminds me that everything I have comes from Him. When I am tired, it reminds me that He is still carrying me.

The Bible does not merely give me information about Jesus. It keeps turning my life toward Him.

Whenever my life begins drifting away, God’s Word points me back to Jesus.

• Jesus is the center of my faith.
• Scripture repeatedly turns my attention toward Him.
• My failures do not have to drive me away from Christ.
• The Christian life is lived looking to Jesus.

• Notice what is pulling your attention away from Jesus.

30. I Learn to Trust the Bible by Walking in What It Says

John 7:17 “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God.”

There is a difference between examining the Bible and obeying the Bible. Questions matter. Study matters. Evidence matters. But eventually I have to decide what I am going to do with what God has shown me.

Jesus said there is a connection between willingness to do God’s will and recognizing His truth.

Some things become clearer after obedience begins.

I learn that forgiveness works when I forgive. I learn that God’s way through temptation is better when I obey Him. I discover that His wisdom is dependable when I follow it through difficult decisions. Trust grows as I walk with Jesus and discover again and again that His Word is true.

I do not have to understand everything before I begin obeying what Jesus has already made clear.

• Honest questions and obedience belong together.
• Willingness to obey affects how I receive truth.
• Experience does not create truth, but obedience confirms its wisdom.
• Trust deepens as I walk with Jesus.

31. I Trust the Bible Because It Brings Me Face-to-Face With Jesus

Luke 24:32. “Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

Two discouraged disciples were walking away from Jerusalem when Jesus came alongside them. At first they did not recognize Him. Then Jesus began opening the Scriptures and showing them what God’s Word had said about the Christ.

Later they realized that while He was opening Scripture, something was happening inside them.

That is a beautiful picture of what the Bible still does.

I open Scripture and discover Jesus. I see who He is. I learn what He has done. I hear His words. I see His Cross. I see the empty tomb. I learn His ways. I discover His promises. And through the Holy Spirit, I learn to walk with the living Christ.

Historical evidence matters. Manuscripts matter. fulfilled prophecy matters. Eyewitness testimony matters. The formation and preservation of the Canon matter. We should study all of them.

But the great purpose of Scripture is that God’s Word brings me to Jesus Christ.

I do not worship the Bible. I worship the God who gave it. And through its pages I continually encounter the Son of God who loved me, gave Himself for me, saved me by His shed blood, rose from the dead, and lives with me today.

I trust the Bible because God has spoken through it, Jesus trusted it, the apostles testified through it, God preserved it, and through it I keep meeting Jesus.

• The purpose of Scripture is ultimately to bring me to Christ.
• Jesus stands at the center of the Biblical story.
• God’s Word teaches me how to know Him and walk with Him.

The Bible can be trusted because God has spoken through it, Jesus trusted and fulfilled it, the apostles testified to what they had seen and heard, and God has preserved His Word through the centuries. Scripture does not merely give us information about God. It continually brings us to Jesus Christ and teaches us how to walk with Him.

Leader Insight

Some men may approach the Bible with real questions. Do not treat questions as rebellion. The Bible can stand examination. Help the men see that Christian faith is not asking them to close their minds. We can look at history, eyewitness testimony, preservation, prophecy, the unity of Scripture, and the resurrection of Jesus.

But keep the discussion from becoming merely an argument about evidence. The strongest purpose of this study is not simply to convince someone that an ancient book has been preserved. It is to help him understand: God has given us His Word so that we may know the truth about Jesus and learn to live with Him.

Keep returning to Jesus.

Jesus trusted Scripture. Jesus fulfilled Scripture. Jesus opened Scripture to His disciples. Jesus said Scripture testified about Him.

Encourage the men to explain why. It might be Jesus’ confidence in Scripture, eyewitness testimony, fulfilled prophecy, preservation, personal experience with God’s Word, or the unity of the Bible.

2. What is the difference between believing the Bible is true and actually trusting what it says?
Bring the discussion toward obedience. A man may say he believes the Bible while ignoring what Scripture says about forgiveness, temptation, anger, honesty, relationships, or daily dependence upon Jesus.

3. How has God’s Word brought you closer to Jesus or changed something in your life?
Give the men room to tell their stories. This brings the study out of history and into daily life.

Digging Deeper

John 17:17 — “Thy word is truth.”
Jesus gives us our foundation. God’s Word is truth.

Luke 24:27 — “Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.”
The Scriptures form one unfolding story that ultimately leads us to Christ.

God did not give Scripture merely to inform us. He gave His Word to prepare us to live.

Do not say, “The Bible is true because the Bible says it is true,” and stop there. Scripture itself gives us much more to work with.

We have eyewitnesses.
We have the resurrection at the center of the apostolic message.

At the same time, do not make human evidence the final foundation of faith. Our confidence ultimately rests in the God who has spoken and in Jesus Christ whom Scripture reveals.

A Word About Difficult Passages

Somebody may say, “There are things in the Bible I don’t understand.”

That is true for all of us.

Encourage the men not to pretend difficult passages do not exist. Instead teach them:

Read carefully. Ask questions. Study the context. Seek good teaching. Compare Scripture with Scripture. And do not throw away what is clear because something else is difficult.

We do not need to understand everything before we can obey what God has already made clear.

Bring It Into Daily Life

Ask the men to think about one place where Scripture is already clear but obedience is difficult.

Maybe the Bible says forgive, but I am holding bitterness.

Maybe Scripture says flee temptation, but I keep getting close to it.

Maybe Jesus tells me not to worry, but fear controls my thinking.

Maybe Scripture tells me to speak truth, but lying has become part of survival.

The question becomes:

If I really believe God’s Word is true, what will I do differently today?

Thank God for giving and preserving His Word.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand Scripture correctly and obey what God shows us.
Ask Jesus to use His Word to change our thinking, choices, relationships, and daily walk.

What I Need to Understand

The Bible did not appear suddenly as one finished book. God worked through real people, over many centuries, to give His Word. The Scriptures were received, preserved, copied, examined, and passed from one generation to another.

But our confidence in the Bible is not based only upon history. Jesus trusted Scripture. Jesus fulfilled Scripture. Jesus taught Scripture. Jesus said Scripture testified about Him. The apostles then testified to what they had personally seen and heard concerning Jesus, especially His death and resurrection.

John 17:17 — “Thy word is truth.”

Five Truths I Need to Remember

1. God has spoken.
2 Timothy 3:16 — “All scripture is given by inspiration of God.”
The Bible is not merely man’s thoughts about God. God worked through human writers to communicate His truth.

2. Jesus trusted Scripture.
John 10:35 — “The scripture cannot be broken.”
If I trust Jesus, His confidence in God’s Word matters to me.

3. The Bible brings me to Jesus.
John 5:39 — “They are they which testify of me.”
The purpose of Bible study is not merely knowing more facts. Scripture helps me know Christ.

4. The apostles gave eyewitness testimony.
Acts 4:20 — “We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”
Christianity is rooted in what Jesus actually did in history, especially His death and resurrection.

5. God’s Word is meant to be lived.
James 1:22 — “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
Trust becomes visible through obedience.

What I Should Do When I Have Questions

Having questions about the Bible does not mean I have no faith. Difficult passages should make me study more carefully, not run away.

When I do not understand something:

• Read the passage carefully.
• Look at what comes before and after it.
• Compare it with other Scripture.
• Ask good questions and seek trustworthy teaching.
• Hold firmly to what Scripture clearly teaches while I continue learning.

I do not have to understand everything in the Bible before I can trust Jesus and obey what He has already made clear.

What the Bible Should Be Doing in Me

God did not give me His Word merely so that I could win arguments about it.

His Word should be:

• Teaching me who Jesus is.
• Showing me what is true.
• Exposing sin in my life.
• Correcting wrong thinking.
• Giving me strength against temptation.
• Giving me hope when life hurts.
• Showing me the next right thing.
• Teaching me how to walk with Jesus every day.

Three Questions for My Own Life

1. What is the strongest reason I have for trusting the Bible?

2. What has God’s Word shown me that I already know I need to obey?

3. Is reading Scripture actually helping me know Jesus better and live differently?

A Simple Way to Read the Bible

Before I read: “Lord Jesus, teach me.”

While I read: “What is God saying here?”

After I read: “What does Jesus want me to do with this today?”

Then do the next right thing He has shown you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me Your Word. Help me not to be afraid of questions, but teach me to search Scripture carefully and humbly. Give me confidence in what You trusted. Help me see You throughout Your Word, recognize Your voice, believe what You say, and obey what You show me. Holy Spirit, teach me truth and use Scripture to change the way I think and live. Keep bringing me closer to Jesus every day. Amen.

I can trust the Bible enough to open it, believe it, obey it, and expect it to keep bringing me to Jesus.
