Commit Your Future to the Lord
Psalm 37:5
“Commit your future to the LORD! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.” — Psalm 37:5, NET
There are three movements in this verse: commit, trust, and watch God act. We usually want God to show us what He is going to do before we commit ourselves to Him. Scripture reverses that order. I give Jesus what I cannot see, trust Him with what I cannot control, and walk faithfully with Him today.
DAY 1 — GIVE JESUS YOUR FUTURE
Psalm 37:5 — “Commit your future to the LORD! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.”
My future does not belong in my hands. I cannot see tomorrow, control tomorrow, or guarantee tomorrow. Jesus can. Committing my future to Him means I stop demanding that I know everything before I move forward.
I can plan wisely, but my confidence is not in the plan. My confidence is in Jesus.
Meaning
- I do not have to know what is coming.
- Jesus already knows.
- I can surrender what I cannot control.
- My future is safest with Him.
Daily Walk
- Give Jesus the things you are worried about.
- Make today’s decisions in obedience to Him.
- Stop trying to solve tomorrow today.
- Trust Jesus with what remains unknown.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I give You my future. I give You the things I understand and the things I do not understand. Keep me from living in fear of tomorrow. Help me obey You today and trust You with everything ahead. Amen.
Today I do not have to control my future. I have to trust Jesus with it.
DAY 2 — TRUST THE ONE WHO ALREADY KNOWS
Matthew 6:8 — “For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Nothing in my future will surprise Jesus. He will never suddenly discover something about my life that He did not know was coming.
That changes the way I face uncertainty. I may be surprised. Jesus will not be.
Trust begins when I believe that Jesus knows more about my life than I do and loves me enough to lead me.
Meaning
- Jesus knows what is ahead.
- He knows what I will need.
- He knows my weaknesses.
- I can trust His wisdom more than mine.
Daily Walk
- Pray instead of guessing.
- Listen before reacting.
- Refuse to panic over what you cannot see.
- Remember that Jesus is already there.
Prayer
Jesus, You know what is coming before I do. Teach me to rest in Your knowledge instead of being frightened by mine. Lead me today, and prepare me for tomorrow. Amen.
The unknown is not unknown to Jesus.
DAY 3 — DO NOT CARRY TOMORROW TODAY
Matthew 6:34 — “So then, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.”
Jesus does not tell me that tomorrow will be easy. He tells me not to carry tomorrow before it arrives.
Much of my anxiety comes from living tomorrow in my mind while Jesus is asking me to walk with Him today.
Today’s grace is for today’s needs.
Meaning
- Worry does not prepare me.
- Jesus gives grace when it is needed.
- Tomorrow belongs to Him.
- My responsibility is today’s obedience.
Daily Walk
- Deal with what is actually in front of you.
- Do the next right thing.
- Refuse imagined disasters.
- Make Jesus first today.
Prayer
Lord, keep me from dragging tomorrow’s problems into today. Give me the grace to live this day with You. Help me do the next right thing and leave tomorrow in Your hands. Amen.
Jesus gives me enough grace for the day I am actually living.
DAY 4 — LET JESUS DIRECT YOUR PATH
Proverbs 3:5–6 — “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. Acknowledge him in all your ways, and he will make your paths straight.”
I get into trouble when I assume that understanding everything is necessary before obeying God.
It isn’t.
Jesus may lead me before He explains where the road is going. Faith says, “Lord, I trust Your direction even when I cannot see the destination.”
Meaning
- My understanding is limited.
- God’s wisdom is not.
- Jesus directs surrendered lives.
- Obedience often comes before explanation.
Daily Walk
- Ask Jesus what obedience looks like today.
- Follow what Scripture clearly says.
- Do not demand every answer.
- Trust the direction of Christ.
Prayer
Jesus, I often want explanations when what I really need is obedience. Direct my steps. Keep me close enough to You that I recognize Your direction and follow it. Amen.
I do not need the whole road. I need Jesus for the next step.
DAY 5 — PUT YOUR PLANS UNDER HIS AUTHORITY
James 4:15 — “You ought to say instead, ‘If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.’”
Planning is wise. Pretending I control the outcome is not.
A surrendered Christian can make strong plans while holding them loosely. I can say, “This is what I believe I should do, Lord, but You have complete authority to change it.”
That is not weakness. That is faith.
Meaning
- Plans are useful.
- Jesus remains Lord over them.
- Changed plans are not always failed plans.
- God’s purpose is greater than my schedule.
Daily Walk
- Make plans prayerfully.
- Leave room for God’s interruption.
- Do not become angry when plans change.
- Ask what Jesus is doing in the change.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I place my plans under Your authority. Close doors that should be closed. Open doors that should be opened. Keep me from loving my plans more than I love Your will. Amen.
My plan serves Jesus. Jesus does not serve my plan.
DAY 6 — TRUST JESUS WHEN THE ROAD CHANGES
Romans 8:28 — “And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”
Sometimes the future we committed to God does not unfold the way we expected.
That does not mean Jesus stopped working.
Romans 8:28 does not say everything that happens is good. It says God is at work through everything for His purpose in the lives of His people.
Meaning
- Disappointment does not mean abandonment.
- Jesus remains present when circumstances change.
- God can use what I would never have chosen.
- His purpose reaches beyond what I can presently see.
Daily Walk
- Do not judge God’s faithfulness by one difficult day.
- Stay close to Jesus when circumstances change.
- Ask what He wants to teach you.
- Keep walking.
Prayer
Jesus, when my road changes, keep my heart from turning away from You. Help me believe that You are still working even when I do not understand what You are doing. Amen.
A changed road does not mean I have lost Jesus.
DAY 7 — WAIT WITHOUT WALKING AWAY
Isaiah 40:31 — “But those who wait for the LORD’s help find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagles’ wings, they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.”
Committing my future to Jesus sometimes means waiting.
Waiting is hard because I want movement, answers, and results. But waiting on Jesus is not doing nothing. It is continuing to trust, pray, obey, and stay close to Him while He determines the timing.
Meaning
- God’s delay is not God’s absence.
- Waiting can strengthen faith.
- Jesus is working while I wait.
- I must not run ahead of Him.
Daily Walk
- Keep praying.
- Keep obeying.
- Keep doing what God has already given you to do.
- Refuse to manufacture your own answer.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me how to wait without becoming discouraged. Keep me from running ahead of You. Give me strength to remain faithful until You show me the next step. Amen.
Waiting on Jesus is still walking with Jesus.
DAY 8 — LET JESUS HANDLE WHAT YOU CANNOT FIX
1 Peter 5:7 — “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
Some things cannot be fixed by harder thinking, more worrying, or greater effort.
They have to be handed to Jesus.
Peter does not say Jesus tolerates my concerns. He says He cares for me. I can give Him the burden because I belong to Him.
Meaning
- Jesus cares about what concerns me.
- Anxiety can be brought directly to Him.
- I was never meant to carry everything.
- Surrender must sometimes happen repeatedly.
Daily Walk
- Name the burden.
- Give it specifically to Jesus.
- When you pick it back up, give it back again.
- Keep doing what obedience requires.
Prayer
Jesus, here is the burden I keep carrying. I give it to You. I cannot control this, but You can handle what I cannot. Help me walk today without dragging this weight behind me. Amen.
I can release what I cannot control because Jesus cares for me.
DAY 9 — BELIEVE THAT JESUS WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU
Hebrews 13:5 — “For he has said, ‘I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.’”
The greatest promise concerning my future is not that nothing difficult will happen.
The promise is that Jesus will be there.
Whatever tomorrow contains, I will not face it without Him.
Meaning
- My future includes the presence of Christ.
- Difficulty cannot separate me from Him.
- I am never abandoned.
- His presence is greater than my circumstances.
Daily Walk
- Begin the day acknowledging Jesus’ presence.
- Talk with Him throughout the day.
- Remember Him when fear rises.
- Go to sleep knowing He remains with you.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You that whatever happens, You will not leave me. Teach me to live aware of Your presence. When fear speaks loudly, remind me that You are nearer still. Amen.
I do not know what tomorrow holds, but I know Jesus will be there.
DAY 10 — LET JESUS USE YOUR PAST WITHOUT LETTING IT CONTROL YOUR FUTURE
2 Corinthians 5:17 — “So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away—look, what is new has come!”
My past may explain some things about me, but it does not own me.
In Christ, my future is not simply a continuation of everything I have previously done wrong. Jesus has entered my life. He forgives, changes, teaches, restores, and leads.
I do not have to keep becoming the person I used to be.
Meaning
- Jesus forgives my past.
- My failures do not have final authority.
- Christ is making me new.
- I can walk differently today.
Daily Walk
- Learn from the past.
- Confess what needs confessing.
- Receive Christ’s forgiveness.
- Choose the next right thing with Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that my past does not get the final word over my life. Forgive me, change me, and teach me. Help me walk today as the person You are making me. Amen.
My past has a history. Jesus has my future.
DAY 11 — EXPECT JESUS TO ACT, BUT LET HIM CHOOSE HOW
Psalm 37:5 — “Commit your future to the LORD! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.”
The verse does not simply say, “Trust God.” It says “He will act.”
That does not mean Jesus will do exactly what I have decided He should do. It means my trust is placed in a living Lord who is actively involved in my life.
Sometimes He changes the circumstance. Sometimes He changes me. Sometimes He opens a door. Sometimes He closes one. Sometimes His answer is immediate. Sometimes His answer unfolds slowly.
But Jesus acts.
Meaning
- Faith expects God to work.
- I do not dictate how He works.
- God’s answer may differ from mine.
- I can trust His action because I trust His heart.
Daily Walk
- Pray specifically.
- Watch carefully.
- Stay obedient.
- Thank Jesus for what He is doing before you understand all of it.
Prayer
Jesus, I believe You are at work. Keep me from demanding that You work only in the way I expect. Give me eyes to see Your hand and a heart willing to accept Your answer. Amen.
I trust Jesus enough to let Him decide what His answer should look like.
DAY 12 — WALK INTO THE FUTURE WITH JESUS
John 10:27–28 — “My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; no one will snatch them from my hand.”
This is where the twelve days bring us.
The Christian future is not mainly about knowing what is going to happen. It is about knowing Who I am following.
Jesus knows me.
I listen to Him.
I follow Him.
He holds me.
That is enough to walk into tomorrow.
I may face things I would never choose. I may experience wonderful things I never expected. There will be victories, disappointments, surprises, ordinary days, difficult days, and joyful days.
But through every one of them, Jesus remains Jesus.
Meaning
- Jesus knows me personally.
- Jesus speaks through His Word.
- My responsibility is to follow Him.
- My life is secure in His hands.
Daily Walk
- Stay close to Jesus.
- Stay in His Word.
- Do the next thing He shows you.
- Leave the outcome with Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, my future belongs to You. I surrender my plans, fears, hopes, questions, family, work, health, ministry, relationships, possessions, and every day that remains in my life. Teach me to listen to You, trust You, and follow You. Whatever comes, keep me close to You. I want my future to be lived with You, for You, and under Your control. Amen.
I do not need to know everything about my future. I need to know Jesus, trust Jesus, and follow Jesus.
